Moana: The glimpse of the changing world!

‘Amazing’ Yes this one word isn’t enough to describe the beautiful creation by Disney – Moana. Although I love ALL Disney movies (Always have, always will, even when I will be 70! πŸ˜‰ ) Moana had a different spark to it. It changed the definition of women/girl’s role in the world. It made me feel proud as a girl because it showed the world what the feminine power is capable of, and Moana is helping to change the perspective of the world.  Even Elsa in Frozen was the beginning mark of this change.  Even if you haven’t watched Moana yet, don’t worry these points won’t give anything away πŸ˜‰

So, here are the top ‘sparks’ which Moana shows proudly!
  • The Girl saves the world!

Yes, She did it!! Not a guy, not her prince. Not a prince who ‘saves’ her. Only she could do it and she did.  This is the first glimpse of the evolution of the world. A girl/women CAN do it without any help from anyone. She just needs to trust herself even if no one else does and even if no one helps her.
  • Moana is the Rescuer not the Rescuee

This is a big change from the previous Disney movies. Moana is the rescuer of the world and her people, she is not the one that needs to be rescued.
We should be able to realize this fact in our world too, our Mom, sister, girlfriend/wife, are the ones who really ‘save’ us on a daily basis. And apart from our life, girls and women are doing this work globally!
  •  Her ‘Goal’ was NOT a prince
This applies to both Moana and Elsa (Frozen). Like previous Disney movies and many rom-coms the goal of the girl/princess is to bag a prince who would come and save her and make her world better. Moana is just the opposite, her goal is to save the world.
Even in the real world and especially in my country (India) people are just waiting to get the girl married, they think that getting a guy is the ultimate goal for the girl. But now I guess the world is ready to change and take the step.

  •   Restoring the balance of Mother Nature
Te Fiti represents Mother Nature – Life giving, loving, and nurturing. All this greed of humans and exploitation of nature have put the Earth into self-destruction mode. It is our duty to restore it. Moana urges every one of us to do our bit towards Mother Nature and our home, planet Earth. Be the Moana of your story! 😊
5.

  • Restoring the balance of the feminine power
If you take away the power of the feminine, destruction and chaos is inevitable. Te Fiti can turn into Te Ka which is exactly what is happening today. This applies both in the physical world and the energy world. The male and female energies and powers are to be honored equally.
The world is shifting from a male-dominant society towards a community which honors and respects both masculine and feminine equally. Balance is the key.
6.

  • The daughter is successor of the family and the village
Moana’s father proudly wants his daughter to be the successor of the family and the chief of the village. In many cultures and in my country, even if the first child is a girl, she is not considered the successor or the ‘heir’. This is now changing, people are willing to change and now they are considering the fact that girl or boy, they are equal! This is a really big shift.

So even if you have watched Moana, these sparks would have definitely changed your way of looking at things and even if you haven’t watched it yet, I can assure you it is worth a shot! (even if you aren’t a fan of Disney movies). I want to thank Sunita Ratun Tahilramani for her great insights which helped to shape this blog! Love you!

I also urge you to keep an open mind and different outlook of the things around you. There is no harm in using different colors in a painting, so why there will be any harm to see and do things differently in the painting of Life πŸ’–

  1. Superb interpretation of woman power and definitely times are changing for good for women. They are being accepted in society playing different roles without being judgemental on their acts.I loved your Balance life statement. One of beautiful change is that now dolls are being made in different colors with change in features and not a zero sized ones n Barbie has taken this initiative.
So small changes are being made for larger perspective..So kudos to you sangmitra for being vocal on this issue
